Residential Inpatient Drug & Alcohol Rehab
Daily Support
Our team is on-site 24/7 to provide support when you need it.
Residential inpatient rehab is live-in addiction treatment where you stay at the facility and receive structured clinical care around the clock. Northridge Addiction Treatment Center provides residential treatment for adults recovering from alcohol and drug addiction, in a 12-person setting with private and semi-private rooms. The typical program runs 30 days, with a physician-led medical team and daily therapy, and most people step in directly after completing detox.
What residential treatment is
Residential treatment is a level of care where you live at the facility full-time while you recover, rather than traveling in for appointments. This is the most structured level of addiction care outside a hospital, and it works because it removes you from the environment, access, and triggers tied to substance use while clinical work is underway. You are supported 24 hours a day by clinical staff, follow a daily schedule of therapy and groups, and stay in a residential setting built for recovery rather than a clinical ward.
The defining feature of residential care is immersion. Outpatient programs ask you to practice recovery while still living in the setting where the addiction developed, which works for some people and not others. Residential treatment gives you a full separation from that setting for the length of the program, which is what many people need to get traction in early recovery. That separation is the point, not a side effect. For the 30 days you are in the program, recovery is the only thing you have to manage, and everything in the environment is arranged around that.
Who residential treatment is for
Residential treatment is the right level of care for people who need a substance-free environment and full-time support to begin recovery safely. It fits several situations: stepping down from medical detox into ongoing treatment, a home environment where substances are present or recovery is not supported, a history of relapse in less structured programs, or a substance use disorder severe enough that daily clinical structure is what stability requires.
This program is built for adults 18 and older. It serves people recovering from alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, and stimulants, including those managing co-occurring conditions like depression, anxiety, and trauma alongside substance use. Addiction rarely travels alone, and for many people the substance use is bound up with an untreated mental health condition, which is why the assessment looks at the whole picture rather than the substance in isolation. If you are not sure residential is the right starting point, an assessment with our team clarifies which level of care matches where you are.
What a day looks like
A typical day in residential treatment combines individual therapy, group sessions, and structured time, on a consistent daily schedule. Mornings and afternoons are built around clinical programming, including one-on-one therapy and group work, with the specific mix set by your treatment plan. The structure is deliberate: a predictable daily rhythm is part of what rebuilds stability in early recovery, when unstructured time is often where cravings and relapse find room.
Care is delivered by a physician-led medical team alongside licensed clinical staff, and because the facility treats only 12 people at a time, that care stays close and individual rather than spread thin. In a large-census facility, you are one of dozens and your treatment is largely standardized. In a 12-person program, the clinical team knows your history, notices when something shifts, and adjusts your plan to match. That difference shows up in the day-to-day experience of being treated as a person rather than a case number.
Northridge also allows approved phone and laptop access, so you can stay connected to work and family responsibilities where appropriate. This matters for adults who cannot fully disappear for a month, and it is a deliberate departure from the traditional model that cuts off all outside contact. Access is structured so that it supports recovery rather than pulling you back into the stress that fed the addiction. The days are full but not clinical in feel, built around recovery rather than confinement.
Therapies and modalities
Residential treatment at Northridge is built on evidence-based therapies, led by cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, helps you identify and change the thought patterns that drive substance use, and it is a foundation of the clinical work here. Dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT, builds skills for managing emotions, distress, and relationships without returning to substances, and it is particularly useful for people whose substance use is tied to emotional regulation.
Individual therapy gives you dedicated time with a clinician to work through the specific drivers of your addiction, while group sessions provide peer support and the recognition that recovery is shared work. Group work does something individual therapy cannot: it puts you alongside people who understand the experience from the inside, which reduces the isolation that so often surrounds addiction.
For people with co-occurring mental health conditions, treatment addresses the depression, anxiety, or trauma alongside the substance use rather than as a separate problem, because treating one without the other tends to fail. When an underlying condition goes untreated, it keeps driving the substance use no matter how much work goes into the addiction itself. Medication is available under physician supervision where it supports recovery, integrated into the clinical plan rather than handled separately.
How long residential treatment lasts
Residential treatment at Northridge runs a typical 30 days, though the right length depends on your clinical needs and progress. Thirty days is the common program length and a point at which many people are ready to step down to a lower level of care, but length of stay is a clinical decision, not a fixed rule. Some people benefit from a longer stay based on the severity of the addiction and their history with treatment.
Residential is one stage in a longer arc of care. The evidence consistently points to longer total engagement in treatment producing better outcomes, and residential is where the intensive work happens before you step down to continued care. Your team reviews your progress throughout and plans the transition to the next stage with you, so that leaving residential is a planned step down rather than an abrupt end. The goal is not simply to complete 30 days but to leave with a plan and the stability to follow it.
Residential vs. outpatient care
Residential treatment has you live at the facility with 24/7 support; outpatient care has you live at home and travel in for sessions. The comparison below shows how the levels differ and who each fits.
Dimension | Residential (inpatient) | Outpatient |
Living arrangement | Live at the facility | Live at home |
Supervision | 24/7 clinical staff | During sessions only |
Structure | Full daily schedule | A few sessions per week |
Best for | Severe addiction, unsafe home setting, relapse history, step-down from detox | Milder cases, strong home support, step-down from residential |
Environment separation | Full separation from triggers | Remains in home environment |
Residential is the right level when the home environment or the severity of the addiction makes recovery at home unrealistic, or when detox has just been completed and stability is still fragile. Outpatient care fits people with a supportive, substance-free home and a milder disorder, and it is often where people continue after finishing residential. Many people move through both, starting in residential and stepping down to outpatient as they stabilize, which is the pattern the evidence supports for lasting recovery.
Getting admitted to residential treatment
Admission to residential treatment starts with a conversation and an assessment, and it can often happen quickly. The first step is a call with our admissions team, who talk through your situation, answer your questions, and check your insurance benefits. From there, a clinical assessment determines the right level of care and, if residential is the fit, builds the initial treatment plan. For people coming directly out of detox, that transition is coordinated so there is no gap between the two stages.
The days right after detox are a high-risk window for relapse, which is why stepping into residential without returning home first protects the progress detox makes. If you are starting from active use rather than detox, the assessment determines whether detox is needed before residential begins. Either way, the aim is to get you into care with as little friction and delay as possible, because the decision to seek treatment is hard enough without a difficult admissions process on top of it.
Insurance and cost of residential treatment
Your health insurance may help cover the cost of residential treatment at Northridge, and the amount depends on your specific plan. We work with Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, Blue Shield of California, Health Net, UnitedHealthcare, and Kaiser Permanente, and we verify your benefits in about 15 minutes, free and confidential. Residential treatment is a significant course of care, and knowing what your plan covers before you start removes one of the biggest sources of stress in the decision.
You do not need your policy details in hand to begin. Submit the verification form or call (855) 584-3819, and our admissions team will explain what your coverage includes in clear terms, with no obligation. Understanding the cost is a practical first step, and we make it a straightforward one rather than something you have to work out alone.
Residential treatment at Northridge Addiction Treatment Center
Northridge Addiction Treatment Center provides residential inpatient rehab in a deliberately small, 12-person setting, which is the feature that most shapes the experience here. A small census means clinical staff know each person, care is individual rather than processed, and the environment stays closer to a home than an institution. The facility is Joint Commission accredited, LegitScript Certified, and licensed by the California Department of Health Care Services, with a physician-led medical team, private and semi-private rooms, and approved phone and laptop access. If you or someone you love needs residential treatment, call (855) 584-3819 to speak with our admissions team.
Frequently asked questions
What is residential treatment?
Residential treatment is live-in addiction care where you stay at the facility full-time and receive structured clinical treatment around the clock. It is the most structured level of care outside a hospital. It removes you from the environment tied to substance use while you do the clinical work of recovery.
How long is residential rehab?
Residential treatment at Northridge typically runs 30 days, though the right length depends on your clinical needs and progress. Thirty days is a common point to step down to a lower level of care. Some people benefit from a longer stay based on the severity of their addiction.
How do you qualify for residential treatment?
Residential treatment fits people who need a substance-free environment and full-time support to recover safely, which an assessment determines. Common situations include stepping down from detox, an unsafe home environment, a history of relapse, or a severe substance use disorder. Our team assesses which level of care matches your situation.
What is the difference between residential and outpatient treatment?
Residential treatment has you live at the facility with 24/7 support, while outpatient care has you live at home and attend sessions. Residential fits severe addiction, unsafe home settings, and early recovery after detox. Outpatient fits milder cases with strong home support, and is often where people continue after residential.
Do I need detox before residential treatment?
If you are physically dependent on a substance, detox comes first, and you then step directly into residential. Detox handles the physical withdrawal safely, and residential addresses the reasons behind the substance use. Your assessment determines whether detox is needed first.
Can I use my phone in residential treatment?
Northridge allows approved phone and laptop access during residential treatment, so you can stay connected to work and family where appropriate. This sets the program apart from facilities that cut off all outside contact. Access is structured so that it supports rather than distracts from recovery.
Will my insurance cover residential treatment?
Your plan may cover residential treatment, and coverage depends on your specific benefits. We work with major carriers including Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, Blue Shield of California, Health Net, UnitedHealthcare, and Kaiser Permanente. I came to Northridge Addiction Treatment Center in Encino back in March not knowing exactly what I needed, only that I wanted to find the right path for my life. What I found there was more than just a treatment program, I found people who genuinely cared about me, my sobriety, and my future. From day one, I felt seen and supported. I believe that God put me here for a reason, and I want to especially recognize Andy Woodward, who had a massive impact on me. He has a way of breaking down the 12 steps that made them feel doable instead of overwhelming. His groups were some of the most engaging and eye-opening experiences I’ve ever had. He made recovery feel like something I could truly own. I also had an incredible counselor, Jude, who listened deeply and helped me work through some of the harder personal things I had buried for years. There are many others I’m so grateful for, Brian, Anthony, Pat, Olivia, Jen, Justin, and Clint. Each one of them played a part in helping me find hope again. There’s even one more staff member whose name I can’t remember, but I’ll never forget her smile, she had a calming presence that stuck with me, even in my dreams (Maybe Olivia). Idk🤔 This place didn’t just teach me how to stay sober, it taught me how to live with purpose. If you’re even slightly considering getting help, NATC could be that life-changing chapter you didn’t know you needed. Gang Gang
