Xanax from Mexico
When purchased from Mexico, the medication brand Xanax, and its generic form, alprazolam, is commonly called Mexican Xanax. In Mexico, the specific brand name for alprazolam is Farmapram. Regardless of their names, these medicines are prescribed to help with anxiety attacks, chronic anxiety disorders, and panic disorders.
Regrettably, powerful medications like Mexican Xanax or Farmapram can result in physical dependence and addiction to benzodiazepines. People addicted to Xanax regularly seek professional medical detox to safely conquer their dependency before receiving treatment to cope with the other aspects of their addiction.
What is Mexican Xanax?
Mexican Xanax bars, called Farmapram, are the Mexican version of alprazolam, a benzodiazepine. In the US, the equivalent to Farmapram is Xanax.
Xanax and Farmapram may have different strengths and places where they are distributed, but they contain the same active ingredient, alprazolam.
Farmapram pills are solid white bars without markings and are often packaged in brown glass jars, usually with 30 bars per bottle. Other doses of Mexican Xanax might be found in blister packs inside boxes, with quantities ranging from 30 to 90 pills.
Recently, the term “Mexican Xanax bars” has been used to describe fake Xanax pills mixed with the synthetic opioid fentanyl. Fentanyl is a potent opioid, 50 to one hundred times stronger than morphine. It is usually added to other illegal drugs because it is cheaper and more addictive. However, it’s also hazardous and potentially lethal.
In a public safety warning issued by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in 2022, it was reported that six out of ten fentanyl-laced pills tested contained a potentially deadly amount of fentanyl. Synthetic opioids like fentanyl played a role in 60% of drug overdose deaths in 2021.
Can You Buy Xanax in Mexico?
Getting Farmapram, the Mexican equivalent of Xanax, in Mexico is neither as simple nor as safe as buying Xanax from a US pharmacy by crossing the border.
Many Americans turn to purchase prescription drugs from Mexico due to high healthcare costs and difficulty obtaining certain medications with a prescription.
Mexico provides quicker and less expensive healthcare alternatives. For instance, a 2mg bar of Xanax in Mexico costs approximately $3 to $5, whereas, within the United States, every bar can vary from $5 to $12. The US cost does not include medical expenses, doctor’s visits, or insurance coverage.
In Mexico, pharmacy assistants can provide alprazolam even if you do not have a prescription, only if you need fewer than 50 capsules. However, suppose you bring more than 50 capsules of any medication from Mexico to the US. In that case, the US Customs and Border Protection Agency calls for you to have a prescription from a licensed American doctor.
It’s critical to realize that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has the task of regulating and ensuring that prescription drugs made and sold within the United States meet safety standards. However, the FDA could not control or guarantee the safety of any medication bought in Mexico.
Is Mexican Xanax Laced with Fentanyl?
While not all Xanax from Mexico is contaminated with fentanyl, it’s important to note that the DEA and FDA caution against significant risks even with Mexican Xanax obtained from a pharmacy.
A recent study has highlighted that many Mexican pharmacies import chemicals from China for drug manufacturing without conducting fentanyl testing. Under the control of cartels, some pharmacies intentionally mix fentanyl with prescription medications.
The Customs and Border Protection Agency successfully intercepts most large shipments of fentanyl-laced Mexican Xanax bars that individuals attempt to smuggle. However, due to the increase of online retailers and fake pharmacies, counterfeit Xanax continues to enter the country.
Recreational users and those who self-medicate with Xanax purchased from street dealers face an even higher risk of obtaining pills laced with fentanyl.
If you buy prescription drugs from outside the United States, the safest approach is to utilize a drug testing kit to check for possible additives, such as fentanyl.
Side Effects
When people consume fake Xanax pills containing alprazolam and fentanyl, they will experience intensified side effects from both medications.
The side effects of Mexican Xanax may include:
- Sleepiness
- Drowsiness and fatigue
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal cramps
- Dizziness
- Increased sweating
- Confusion
- Vomiting
- An inability to stay awake
- Difficulty breathing
- Coma
- Overdose
Both fentanyl and alprazolam are potent sedatives. When combined with other depressants like alcohol or benzodiazepines, whether intentionally or unintentionally, the risk of a potentially fatal overdose is significantly heightened.
If someone takes too much fentanyl and has an overdose, giving them Narcan (naloxone) can reverse the effects and help save their life. However, Narcan does not help the symptoms caused by alprazolam. Still, even if only some of the dangerous effects are reversed, it can provide extra time until emergency help arrives.
